Gentle Answer vs Harsh Words – 15:1-2

Gentle Answer vs Harsh Words
Proverbs 15:1-2

1
A gentle answer turns away wrath,
but a harsh word stirs up anger.
2
The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge,
but the mouth of the fool gushes folly.

PCdc Commentary

The wise person gives a gentle answer and turns away wrath.
The fool uses harsh words and aggravates the anger.
Ever argue with someone just because one of your buttons was pushed?
Pointless, no?

Home Maintenance 14:1

Home Maintenance
Proverbs 14:1

The wise woman builds her house,
but with her own hands the foolish one tears hers down.

PCdc Commentary

The woman of the house is the homemaker.
If she is wise, the home is successful.
If she is foolish, the home is destroyed by her own hands.
A successful household requires wisdom from the woman of the house.

Honor Your Father 13:1

Honor Your Father
Proverbs 13:1

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction,
but a mocker does not respond to rebukes.

PCdc Commentary

The Scriptures command us to honor our parents.
There is an old saying that when I was 16, I thought my dad was foolish.
When I was 26, I was shocked by how wise he had become in just 10 years.
Rare is the father’s advice that should not be heeded.

On Discipline 12:1

On Discipline
Proverbs 12:1

Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge,
but whoever hates correction is stupid.

PCdc Commentary

The essence of discipline is simply
Direction To Create Habits.
Many, including myself before I joined the Navy, confuse punishment with discipline.
But, punishment is only an aspect of discipline.
The overall goal of discipline is to create the impulse to act accordingly.
Make your bed. Brush your teeth. Be on time. Do your job. Help others.
Contempt for discipline is unreasonable.

On Calibration 11:1

On Calibration
Proverbs 11:1

The Lord detests dishonest scales,
but accurate weights find favor with him.

PCdc Commentary

Obviously, to intentionally cheat others is detestable.
But, what about inadvertently?
A moral system of weights and measures is required for precision.
Five pounds is five pounds.
When the measurement drifts from the standard,
the standard must be reinstated.
This brings us back to Proverbs 9:1-6
Wisdom, like weight, is absolute.
